At only 21 years old, Sofia was referred to DCFS for family preservation services due to having two young children who had witnessed severe domestic violence. Depressed and unable to take take positive feedback, she dropped out of her trade program and became chronically unemployed, working for various seasonal warehouses that would last a few weeks at a time. One Christmas, Sofia was unable to get out of bed.
In-Home Consultation supported Sofia by helping her return to school. Auxiliary funds were requested and approved to cover two months of rent, which allowed her to finish her school program externship hours. Sofia was able to finish her externship and began working part time at a medical office. Sofia and her In-Home Outreach Counselor worked on her resume and helped her practice for job interviews. She was able to secure a full time job at a doctor’s office in Los Angeles just days before her DCFS case was closed.
Since then, Sofia has been able to obtain a stable job and has acquired the skills as a medical assistant that will transfer to other positions in the future and her children were enrolled in Early Headstart to help improve their r socialization and other developmentally appropriate skills.
